The Forest That Almost Disappeared
Most people who have driven through the valleys of Connemara, west Cork or the Beara Peninsula have passed through the remnants of Ireland's Atlantic rainforest without knowing what they were looking at. Small, twisted trees — mostly oak, hazel, birch and holly — clinging to steep rocky valley sides above rivers and streams, their branches draped in mosses, liverworts and lichens that hang in curtains from every surface. The effect, on a grey Atlantic day with mist drifting through the canopy, is of something ancient and slightly otherworldly. Ireland's Atlantic rainforests are temperate rainforests rich in biodiversity, featuring ancient trees, ferns, and a variety of wildlife. They are called rainforests not because of their size or their canopy structure — they bear little resemblance to the tropical rainforests of popular imagination — but because of their climate: the high rainfall, high humidity and mild temperatures of Ireland's Atlantic coast create exactly the conditions in which the distinctive community of mosses, liverworts, ferns and lichens that characterise this habitat type can thrive. The oceanic temperate rainforest is one of the rarest habitat types in Europe, with Ireland's fragments representing a globally significant proportion of the total remaining extent.
What Remains — and What Was Lost
The original Atlantic rainforest covered a significant portion of Ireland's western seaboard — the valleys and hillsides from Donegal to Kerry where the combination of high rainfall and moderate temperature creates optimal conditions for the habitat. Centuries of clearance for agriculture, timber and fuel reduced that forest to fragments — scattered pockets of woodland in steep valleys and on rocky hillsides where the land was too inaccessible or too poor to clear profitably. Today, estimates of the remaining extent of genuine Atlantic rainforest in Ireland range from approximately 1% to 2% of the original forest cover — a tiny remnant of what once existed, but one that retains extraordinary ecological richness and global significance.
The fragments that remain are under continuing pressure. Sitka spruce, sika deer and common garden plants are all invasive species with potential to cause harm to native varieties — and in the Atlantic rainforest context, the impact of invasive species is acute. Rhododendron ponticum, introduced to Ireland as a garden ornamental in the 18th century, has spread extensively through the native woodlands of Kerry, Connemara and Wicklow, forming dense thickets that suppress native woodland regeneration by blocking light and altering soil chemistry. Sika deer, introduced from Japan in the 19th century, browse the regenerating seedlings of native tree species before they can establish, effectively preventing the natural expansion of woodland into adjacent unforested ground. Control of both rhododendron and deer is among the most labour-intensive and expensive elements of Atlantic rainforest conservation.
The Restoration Movement
Against this backdrop of historical loss and continuing pressure, a genuine restoration movement has been growing in Ireland over the past decade — driven by a combination of government policy, voluntary action, philanthropic investment and a growing public awareness of what native woodland actually is and what it provides. The Native Woodland Scheme, operated through the Department of Agriculture, provides financial support for the establishment of new native woodland and the restoration of existing semi-natural woodland — with payments calibrated to incentivise the most ecologically valuable woodland types, including the Atlantic oakwood and hazel scrub communities that characterise the rainforest habitat.
The Trees on the Land scheme, launched in 2023 and running through the current CAP programming period to 2027, provides support for farmers and landowners planting native woodland on agricultural land — a recognition that the most significant opportunities for woodland expansion in Ireland lie on private farmland rather than on the public land already managed for conservation. By bringing woodland planting support into the mainstream of agricultural funding rather than treating it as a separate environmental programme, the scheme has significantly increased both the number of applicants and the total area of new native woodland being established annually.
The voluntary sector has also been active. Native Woodland Trust, the Irish charity dedicated to the restoration of Ireland's native forest, has been acquiring, restoring and managing native woodland sites across the country — removing invasive species, reintroducing native trees and working with adjacent landowners to create connected woodland corridors that allow the movement of species between isolated fragments. The rewilding approach advocated by organisations like Rewilding Ireland — allowing natural ecological processes to operate with minimal human intervention, trusting the landscape to recover toward its ecological potential given sufficient space and time — is gaining traction in public and policy conversation, if not yet at the scale required to make a measurable impact on Ireland's total woodland cover.
The Carbon and Climate Dimension
The restoration of Ireland's Atlantic rainforest has a climate dimension that is increasingly central to the policy conversation. Native woodland in Ireland sequesters carbon in both its biomass — the trees, shrubs and ground vegetation — and in its soil organic matter, which accumulates over decades as leaf litter and woody debris decompose under the canopy. Research by Teagasc and UCC has confirmed that mature native woodland on appropriate soils can sequester carbon at rates comparable to other well-managed woodland types, while providing ecological and water quality benefits that monoculture conifer plantations cannot match. As Ireland's climate action programme increasingly recognises the role of natural carbon sinks in achieving its net zero trajectory, the case for accelerating native woodland restoration — including Atlantic rainforest fragments and their expansion — has never been stronger.
